1. Water.
It is important to have a supply of water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning in the event of an emergency. At least 1 gallon per person per day should be stored for 3 days. Water can also be stored in large containers such as bathtubs and buckets that have been previously filled with clean water. If you have access to a larger water source, like a pond or lake, you can use it as a backup.
2. Nonperishable food items.
Non-perishable food items should be stored in the event of an emergency. Canned and dried foods are best since they do not require cooking or refrigeration and have a long shelf life. Some examples include canned meats, soups, fruits, and vegetables; cereal; peanut butter; nuts; crackers; granola bars; dried fruit; jerky; and other high-energy snacks.
3. First aid kit.
A first aid kit is essential for treating minor injuries during an emergency situation. A basic first aid kit should include bandages, gauze, medicine, antiseptic wipes and lotion, scissors, tweezers, and a thermometer.
4. Personal hygiene items.
It is important to have personal hygiene items on hand in case of an emergency situation. This should include toilet paper, soap, toothbrush & toothpaste, shampoo & conditioner, deodorant, and feminine products (if necessary).
5. Flashlights (with extra batteries).
Having flashlights with extra batteries on hand will allow you to navigate in the dark if the power goes out during an emergency. It’s also a good idea to have some form of illumination that does not depend on electricity such as glow sticks or candles.
6. Battery-powered or hand crank radio.
A radio is essential for staying informed during an emergency situation. Make sure to have a battery-operated or hand-crank radio that can receive AM and FM signals as well as NOAA weather alerts, so you can be aware of any storm warnings or other safety information
7. Cell phone with charger (or solar charger).
Having a charged cell phone is important in order to stay connected with family and friends during an emergency event. It’s also useful for listening to the news and accessing updates on the internet if available. Make sure to have a generator, car adapter, solar charger, or some other form of power source stored in case electricity is unavailable.
8. Whistle to signal for help.
Having a whistle is essential in order to signal for help if there is an emergency situation and you find yourself in need of assistance.
9. Copy of important documents in a waterproof container.
It’s important to have a copy of important documents such as birth certificates, passports, insurance papers, etc., stored in a waterproof container so they do not get damaged or lost during an emergency event.
10. Emergency contact list with numbers.
Another important item to have on hand is an emergency contact list that includes phone numbers for family members and close friends who can be contacted during an emergency situation. It’s also helpful to have additional contact numbers for local emergency services, such as the police and fire departments.
11. Clothing & blankets.
Having extra clothing and blankets on hand is important for staying warm in the event of a power outage. Sturdy shoes, hats, gloves, coats, and long pants should also be included in your emergency kit.
12. Medications & medical supplies.
If any members of your household require medications or medical supplies on a regular basis, make sure to have an ample supply stored away in case they are needed during an emergency event. This should include items like prescription medications, over-the-counter pain relievers, bandages, and splints.
