1. Brake Connections
All brake connections must be checked prior to departure to ensure that they are properly connected and not worn out or loose. This includes brakes, hoses, and lines. The condition of the hoses should also be checked to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, or leaking. Any damaged or missing parts should be replaced.
2. Brakes
The brakes must be checked to make sure they are functioning correctly, as faulty brakes can lead to an accident. The air pressure should also be checked and adjusted if necessary. Any worn or cracked parts should be identified and replaced.
3. Coupling Chains
The coupling chains should be inspected for any signs of wear, corrosion, and loose connections. If the chains appear to have suffered any damage they must immediately be replaced with a new set.
4. Coupling (King) Pin
The condition of the coupling pin should also be examined closely for any signs of rust, cracks, deformities or excessive wear and tear. The pin must be securely fastened in place to ensure the trailer is properly connected to the vehicle.
5. Doors
All doors should be checked for any signs of rust, dents or damage. The locks must also be tested to make sure they are working properly and that the keys are present if needed.
6. Hitch
The hitch should be examined closely to make sure it is secure and attached correctly. Any worn or missing parts must be replaced immediately before departure.
7. Landing Gear
The landing gear should also be checked for any signs of wear and tear or corrosion on its hinges and axle assembly, as well as for loose nuts or bolts that could cause problems with maneuverability once underway.
8. Lights
All lights should be checked to ensure they are working properly, including headlights, taillights, brake and turn signals. The lenses must also be checked for any signs of cracking or discoloration.
9. Roof
The roof should be examined for cracks, holes, or other damage that could lead to leaks once on the road. Any issues must be dealt with promptly before departure.
10. Springs
The condition of all springs should be assessed as well in order to ensure the smooth operation of the vehicle during acceleration and when driving over rough terrain. Weak or damaged springs can cause stability issues and may need to be replaced if necessary.
11. Tarpaulin
The tarpaulin must be checked for any signs of wear and tear or holes which could allow water to seep into the cargo area. If the tarp is damaged, a new one should be installed immediately before departure.
12. Tires
Tire pressure should be checked as well to make sure it is at the specified level. The tread depth must also be inspected to ensure there is enough remaining for safe driving conditions. Any tires that are worn or damaged should be replaced prior to leaving on the trip.
13. Wheels
Finally, all wheel bearings should be inspected for excessive play or damage, and if needed they should be replaced with freshly greased ones. The lug nuts must also be checked to make sure they are properly tightened and secure.
