1. Your photo learner permit.
In New York, all drivers must have a valid Photo Learner Permit with their full name and date of birth listed on it before they can be eligible to take a driver's test. This permit is issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and must be in the possession of the driver at all times during the test.
2. Glasses or contacts, if your permit indicates you need corrective lenses.
If the learner's permit indicates that the driver needs to wear corrective lenses while operating a motor vehicle, then glasses or contact lenses must be worn at all times during the road test. Failing to do so will result in an automatic fail of the exam.
3. Your original Pre-licensing Course Certificate (MV-278) or Student Certificate of Completion (MV-285).
In New York State, drivers must complete a pre-licensing course before they can take their driving test. The Certificate of Completion (MV-278) issued upon successful completion of the course must be provided to the license examiner or included in your application packet. It is not sufficient to provide copies of this document, as originals are required.
4. Certification of Supervised Driving (MV-262).
If you are under 18 years old, you must present a signed and completed certification of supervised driving (MV-262) by a parent or guardian each time you take a road test. This form must be obtained from the DMV and submitted along with other documents for your driver's license application.
5. A driver age 21 or older who has a valid license.
You must have a supervising driver who is at least 21 years old and has a valid New York State Driver's License to operate the vehicle for your road test. This driver must remain in the car with you during the entire test and must be ready to take control of the vehicle if necessary.
6. A vehicle to drive during the test.
The vehicle used for testing must have a valid registration and inspection, be in good working condition, and be kept clean on both the inside and outside. The supervisor should inspect it prior to each road test, as any discrepancies could result in failure of this section of the exam.
