1. Maintenance:
Ensure that all parts of the forklift are in proper working order and regularly inspected, as well as replace any broken or worn-out components.
2. Training:
Operators must be trained and certified to operate a forklift safely according to OSHA standards.
3. Safety Equipment:
Inspect for the presence and condition of necessary safety equipment including seat belts, mirrors, brakes, horns, fire extinguishers, and warning labels.
4. Load Limits:
Ensure that the load capacity is not exceeded and that loads are evenly distributed across the forks or platform.
5. Visibility:
Check that there are no obstructions in the operator's field of vision which may reduce visibility while driving or loading/unloading.
6. Pedestrians:
Maintain a safe distance from pedestrians and other vehicles while driving, and use extra caution when operating on ramps or inclines.
7. Speed Limits:
Stick to the posted speed limit for all areas in which the forklift is operated.
8. Fuel Levels:
Ensure that fuel and oil levels are regularly checked and topped up if necessary and that the battery is charged.
