1. Life jackets
Life jackets are a critical safety item and should always be worn while on the river, regardless of age or skill level.
2. Rafts/boats
Having an inflatable raft or boat for the trip makes for a more enjoyable experience, as well as provides easier transportation to shore when needed.
3. Maps & Compass
Knowing where you are and where you’re going is key to having an enjoyable time on the water and being able to find your way back home without getting lost.
4. Sun protection
Don’t forget sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and other sun-protection items so that everyone can stay safe in the sunshine!
5. Food & Water
Pack enough food and water for the duration of the trip, as well as snacks in case you get hungry before it’s time to eat.
6. First-aid kit
You never know when someone might need a bandage or some other medical supplies, so make sure to have a first-aid kit handy just in case.
7. Emergency supplies
It’s important to have an emergency kit with items such as a flashlight, rope, whistle, firestarter, and more in case of an unexpected situation.
8. Clothing & Footwear
Dress appropriately for the weather conditions, but also make sure there are extra layers and rain gear on hand if needed. Good footwear is also important, especially when portaging or hiking.
9. Binoculars
Having binoculars on a float trip is great for bird and animal watching, as well as helping to spot potential hazards ahead of time.
10. Repair kit
Bring along a repair kit with items such as duct tape and spare parts so that any minor issues can be taken care of quickly and easily before they become major problems.
11. Entertainment
Don’t forget to bring along something to keep everyone entertained while enjoying the natural beauty of the river! This could include books, board games, frisbees, cards, musical instruments, and more depending on personal preference and space/weight limitations.
12. Trash bags
It’s always important to leave the river better than you found it, so bring along some trash bags to help collect any litter that may be left behind by other people.
