1. Fishing License:
Obtaining a valid fishing license is an important step before heading out on the ice, as these are required by law in many states.
2. Clothing and Footwear:
Wear clothing that is suitable for cold weather conditions, such as insulated boots, winter hats, thick gloves, heavy coats, and layers of other warm clothing items.
3. Safety Gear:
Ice picks or cleats should be worn to help prevent falling through thin ice; it’s also recommended to have an emergency whistle or some type of signaling device if someone gets lost while out on the ice.
4. Fishing Tackle:
This can include baits like wax worms and lures for catching fish; it can also include a fishing rod and reel, line, hooks, sinkers, bobbers, pliers, and any other tackle you might need.
5. Ice Fishing Gear:
This includes an ice auger or chisel to cut or drill holes in the ice; buckets or pails to store your catch; fishfinders to locate fish under the ice; and shelters like pop-up tents and shanties for warmth.
6. Food and Drinks:
Staying hydrated while out on the ice is very important; snacks are also a good idea so you don’t get too hungry while waiting for a bite.
7. Miscellaneous Items:
Having extra items such as flashlights, a first-aid kit, extra batteries and ice cleats, can come in handy if something unexpected comes up while out on the ice.
8. Camera:
Don’t forget to bring a camera so you can capture all of the great memories from your ice fishing trip! It's always fun to look back on photos for years to come.
