1. Food
Generally, food items should include canned and non-perishable foods that are easy to prepare, such as canned vegetables, fruits, and soups. Dried grains and beans can also provide vital nutrients and energy when there is no access to fresh food items.
2. Water
At least one gallon of water per person, per day, should be stored in clean containers in a cool, dark place. It is also important to have extra water to use for hygiene purposes or to wash dishes.
3. Medical Supplies
Essential medical items such as bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers should be included in the emergency stockpile. Prescription medications should also be stored in a secure location where they can easily be accessed.
4. Tools
Tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches and pliers can be used to make repairs or construct temporary shelters in emergency situations.
5. Communication Items
Having a reliable way to communicate with the outside world is essential. A battery-powered radio or satellite phone can provide access to news and updates, as well as contact loved ones in times of need.
6. Clothing
Having appropriate clothing for the expected climate is important. Keep extra blankets and warm coats available, as well as rain gear and hats in case of colder temperatures.
7. Shelter Items
An emergency shelter can provide protection from the elements and make it easier to move around in a survival situation. Tents, tarps, rope, and waterproof matches should be included in an emergency stockpile.
8. Specific to Geographic Area
Depending on where the stockpile is located, additional items should be included. For example, if it is near a water source then life jackets or waterproof pouches may need to be added. Additionally, items specific to the climate of the area should also be taken into account. Flashlights and extra batteries are essential for all locations as light sources.
