1. Helmets
When bikepacking, helmets are a must-have item of safety gear. Depending on the type of terrain and environment you'll be traversing, you may want to consider investing in a helmet suited for off-road cycling. The right helmet should provide a secure fit and protection from potential head injuries, while also allowing for adequate ventilation - especially if you're planning on riding in warmer climates.
2. Appropriate Tires
Having the right tire for your bike is essential for any bikepacking adventure. When selecting tires, consider factors such as terrain type and weather conditions that may be encountered during the trip. For example, knobby tires are great for off-road trails, whereas slicks may provide better traction when traversing paved roads.
3. Spare Tubes
It's always a good idea to bring extra tubes on any bikepacking excursion in case of unexpected flat tires or other mechanical difficulties while out on the trail. Make sure to select tubes that match both your wheel size and tire type so they can easily be replaced should the need arise.
4. Pumps
Having a good quality pump is essential for any bikepacking trip. This will allow you to quickly and easily replenish the air in your tires should they become deflated while out on the trail. Make sure to select one that is compatible with both your wheel size and tire type, as well as being lightweight and easy to transport when necessary.
5. Clothing Layers
Layering clothing can be an effective way of staying comfortable throughout a bikepacking adventure, regardless of changing weather conditions or temperatures. Be sure to pack items such as long-sleeved shirts, jackets and windbreakers in order to stay protected from the elements. Additionally, don't forget items such as hats and gloves, which can be useful for keeping your hands and head warm during colder climates.
6. Food Rations
It's important to bring enough food supplies on any bikepacking trip in order to keep yourself well-fed throughout the journey. This could include items such as snacks, sandwiches, trail mix, energy bars, etc - depending on how long you'll be out and whether you plan on cooking meals or not. Remember to pack a few extra portions just in case of an emergency!
7. Water Containers
Having sufficient water is key for any prolonged physical activity - especially when bikepacking over longer distances or in hotter climates. Be sure to pack enough containers with clean drinking water so that you remain hydrated throughout the trip. Portable water filters may also be useful for refilling those containers if necessary.
8. First Aid Kits
It's always a good idea to bring along a first-aid kit on any bikepacking adventure, as even minor injuries can be incredibly inconvenient when out in the wilderness. Make sure to include items such as bandages, gauze pads, medical tape, pain relief medications, antiseptic wipes and antibacterial ointment - just in case of emergencies!
9. Navigation Tools (maps, etc.)
Having detailed maps of your route is essential for any successful bikepacking trip - especially since cell phone reception can often be unreliable or even nonexistent in some areas. Additionally, many bike-specific navigation systems are now available that can help you stay on track and alert you to upcoming turns or elevation changes.
10. Bike Locks/Cables
It's always a good idea to bring along bike locks and/or cables in case of any unexpected stops. This can help to ensure the safety of your bike and prevent potential theft while out on the road or trail. Make sure to select items that are both lightweight and easy to carry, yet strong enough to withstand would-be thieves!
11. Bike Repair Kits
Lastly, don't forget about packing a basic bike repair kit for those inevitable mechanical difficulties that may come up during your trip. Items like tire levers, wrenches, hex keys, patch kits and multitools should all be included in the bag - just in case some roadside maintenance is necessary.
12. Repair Tools
Having the right tools to repair and maintain your bike is essential for any successful bikepacking trip. Make sure to bring items such as Allen keys, wrenches, screwdrivers, chain lube, spare bolts and screws, etc - all of which will be handy for quickly fixing any unexpected issues that may arise while out on the trail.
13. Personal Hygiene Products
Lastly, don't forget about personal hygiene products like shampoo, soap, toothpaste and toilet paper - all of which can help you stay feeling refreshed and energized throughout your journey. Additionally, consider bringing along a camping shower in order to rinse off after long days on the road or trails.
