1. Water supply
Before you move, be sure to contact the local water board and arrange to have your water supply disconnected. Be ready to provide them with the address of your new home and they should be able to advise you on how long it will take for them to switch off the water and what other steps may be involved in the process.
2. Gas
Your gas connection should be disconnected when you move house, as it’s a safety precaution to do so. Contact your local gas company and provide them with the address of your new home in order for them to arrange the disconnection.
3. Electricity
Contact your electricity supplier before you move in order to arrange for your supply to be switched off at the old property, and reconnected at the new one. Be sure to inform them of the dates that you need these changes made, as well as provide them with details of your new address.
4. Broadband
Inform your broadband provider about where you will be moving and when, so they can arrange to disconnect your service at the old property and connect it again to the new one.
5. Council tax
Be sure to inform your local council of your change of address, as you will be liable for paying council tax at both properties until the date that you move out of the old one.
6. Home insurance
You should check with your current insurer if they are able to extend your home insurance policy to cover any items while they’re in transit during the move, or investigate alternative policies from other insurers which may provide better rates or coverage.
