1. Pre-Flight Checklist
A pre-flight checklist is a comprehensive list of tasks that must be completed prior to takeoff. This includes checking weather conditions, completing pre-flight inspections, verifying aircraft systems and instruments, confirming the Flight Release and Pilot Authorization forms are complete and accurate, checking fuel and oil levels, testing radio communications equipment and verifying navigation systems are set up correctly.
2. Preflight Preparation
Prior to takeoff, pilots must ensure the aircraft is ready and all conditions are favorable for a safe flight. This includes checking weather reports, ensuring any required maintenance is complete, completing pre-flight inspections of the aircraft and its systems and reviewing any special procedures that may be necessary for the particular flight. Pilots will also go over a walkaround inspection of the exterior of the plane, looking for any damage or abnormalities on the exterior surface.
3. Post-Takeoff Procedures
Once airborne, a pilot must perform several post-takeoff procedures to ensure continued safety throughout the flight. These include verifying engine operation and fuel levels, monitoring the aircraft's systems and instruments, and verifying navigation aids are set up correctly. Pilots should also check for any bird activity in the area and take necessary evasive action if necessary.
4. Landing Checklist
A landing checklist is a comprehensive list of tasks that must be completed prior to landing an aircraft safely on the ground. This includes verifying engine operation, checking fuel levels, setting flaps and spoilers, confirming navigation systems are set up correctly and ensuring all passengers have their seat belts fastened.
5. After Landing Procedures
Once an aircraft has landed safely on the ground, pilots will go through several after landing procedures to ensure continued safety of the plane and its occupants. These include shutting down engines, checking fuel levels, verifying all systems are operational, completing a post-flight inspection and ensuring all passengers have disembarked. Pilots should also check any bird activity in the area prior to taxiing off the runway.
