1. Socialization
Socializing your puppy is of the utmost importance for a healthy and well-rounded pup. This means exposing them to humans and other animals, including other puppies and dogs, in a variety of settings. Doing so helps to ensure that your pup is comfortable with different environments and more likely to become a well-behaved adult dog.
2. Training
Training your puppy should start as soon as possible. Teaching basic obedience commands such as sit, stay and come are great ways to ensure that your pup is responsive to verbal cues and able to follow direction. It is also important to remember that training takes patience, consistency, and lots of positive reinforcement.
3. Health Care
Proper health care for puppies begins with routine veterinary visits including vaccinations, regular deworming, and flea/tick prevention. Additionally, discussions about proper nutrition and parasites should be had with a veterinarian in order to ensure best practices are followed for the life of the puppy.
4. Nutrition
Nutrition plays an important role in the development of a puppy. The diet should be appropriate for their age and breed, as well as customized to meet the needs of your pup. Puppies should eat two to three meals per day that are free from harmful additives or fillers.
5. Identification
Identifying your pup is an important way to ensure their safety and security in case they get lost or stolen. Microchipping is the most reliable method of identification but other forms such as collars with tags can also help make sure your puppy gets back home safe and sound.
6. Grooming
Grooming helps keep puppies healthy and clean by removing dirt, mats, and dead skin cells while stimulating circulation in the skin. Brushing your pup’s coat regularly can help prevent tangles and mats from forming. Additionally, it’s important to keep their nails trimmed as overgrown nails can cause discomfort when they are walking or playing.
7. Supervision
Puppies need to be supervised at all times while in the home, especially when there are young children present. It is important to teach children how to interact with puppies safely, such as not grabbing them or pulling their tails or fur. In addition, puppies should never be left unsupervised outdoors for long periods of time as this can lead to accidents and other dangerous situations.
