1. Sunscreen
Make sure to apply sunscreen before you head out with your toddler, and then reapply every couple of hours or after your toddler has been in the water. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen, such as those containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, that protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Look for a sunscreen that is water-resistant and contains an SPF of at least 15.
2. Beach hat
Choose a beach hat with straps or one that ties under your toddler’s chin to help keep it on his head, even when the wind picks up. Make sure the hat has a wide brim to protect the face, neck, and ears.
3. Rash guard
A rash guard helps protect your toddler’s skin from sunburn and chafing caused by sand or saltwater while they play in the surf. Choose a loose-fitting shirt made of lightweight fabric designed to be worn during aquatic activities.
4. Umbrella/Beach tent
An umbrella or beach tent provides portable shade for your toddler. Look for an umbrella that is lightweight and easy to set up, or a beach tent with at least two poles and four sides made of waterproof materials.
5. Waterproof diapers
Waterproof diapers are designed to help keep your toddler dry while they splash around in the water. Choose one that is snug-fitting but not too tight, and make sure it has a wide crotch area for easy movement.
6. Water shoes or flip-flops
The ocean floor can be rocky and slippery, making it unsafe for toddlers’ bare feet. Invest in some water shoes or flip-flops with non-slip soles to protect their little feet from sharp rocks and debris.
7. Water bottle
Bring plenty of water to keep your toddler hydrated while they are playing in the sun. Look for a lightweight, spill-proof water bottle that is easy for toddlers to hold and sip from.
8. Snacks
Pack some healthy snacks to keep your toddler’s energy levels up as they play in the sand and surf. Choose snacks like unsalted crackers, sliced fruits, or trail mix that can withstand being out in the heat without spoiling quickly.
9. Beach toys
To help keep your toddler entertained while you’re at the beach, bring along some fun toys like shovels, pails, and beach balls. Choose durable ones that won’t break easily and can withstand being in the sand.
10. Beach towels
Bring at least two beach towels—one for drying off after going in the water, and one for laying down on the sand or sitting on a chair. Choose an absorbent towel that won’t hold too much sand when wet.
11. Beach chairs
Beach chairs can provide a comfortable spot for your toddler to sit while they play in the sand or take a rest. Look for lightweight, portable beach chairs that fold up easily and have adjustable backrests.
12. Puddle jumper or life jacket
If you plan on letting your toddler swim in the ocean, make sure you bring along a puddle jumper or a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Choose one that fits snugly but not too tight, and is designed for their age group and weight range.
13. Baby powder
Baby powder can help absorb excess moisture from your toddler’s skin after playing in the water or swimming in the ocean. Make sure to pack it in an airtight container to keep the sand out.
14. A waterproof beach bag
To store all of your toddler’s beach essentials, choose a waterproof bag that is roomy enough for all their items but easy to carry. Look for one with multiple pockets or compartments and adjustable straps for extra convenience.
15. First aid kit
Pack a first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, antibiotic ointment, anti-itch cream, sunscreen, bug spray and any other items you might need in the event of an emergency. Make sure to store it in a waterproof bag for added protection from sand or sea water.
