1. One or both partners exhibit controlling behavior.
This includes controlling where you go, who you talk to, how much time you spend together and what activities you do.
2. There is emotional manipulation present.
This can include gaslighting, guilt-tripping and shaming. It’s often used to control the other person or make them feel like they’re not good enough.
3. Excessive jealousy is displayed.
Jealousy isn’t always a bad thing, but it can become dangerous if it’s excessive and one partner constantly accuses the other of cheating or flirting with someone else.
4. Partners are verbally abusive towards each other.
Verbal abuse includes name calling, mocking, belittling or threatening language that causes fear in the listener.
5. There is a lack of trust between partners.
If there is a lack of trust between partners, it can be a sign that the relationship is unhealthy.
6. Secretive behavior is exhibited by one or both partners.
This includes withholding information about their lives, finances, whereabouts and refusing to communicate openly.
7. Physical violence takes place in the relationship.
Physical violence may involve hitting, pushing, slapping or other aggressive behavior with the goal of scare or harm the other partner.
8. Financial control and withholding of money is used as a form of abuse.
One partner might refuse to give money to the other or try to control how they spend it as a way to control them. This should not be tolerated in any relationship.
9. Partners belittle and put down each other.
Putting down or belittling a partner can make them feel unworthy and create an atmosphere of fear in the relationship .
10. One partner is always trying to control what the other does.
This type of behavior can be seen as a form of manipulation, as one partner tries to force their will on the other by making decisions for them without considering their feelings or needs. This is not acceptable in any relationship.
