1. Counting:
This skill focuses on counting up to 100, writing numbers in words and numerical order, as well as recognizing sequences and patterns of numbers.
2. Addition & Subtraction:
Learners should be able to quickly add or subtract two-digit numbers using a variety of strategies, such as mental math or a written algorithm.
3. Place Value:
This skill involves understanding the value of each digit in a number and being able to write a three-digit number using an expanded form.
4. Time & Measurement:
Students should be able to tell time and use standard units of measurement such as inches or centimeters accurately and with confidence.
5. Money:
Knowing how to identify coins, count and compare money values, as well as make changes are all important skills for first graders to possess.
6. Graphs & Data:
Students should be able to read and interpret graphs and organize data into different types of tables.
7. Geometry:
This skill includes recognizing two-dimensional shapes such as circles, squares, or triangles, being able to accurately measure angles, and calculating the perimeter of a shape.
8. Fractions & Decimals:
Being able to recognize fractions as parts of a whole and identify decimal numbers is an important part of developing math skills in first grade.
