1. Inspect the ladder before each use
Check to make sure that the ladder is structurally sound and free of defects or damage.
2. Wear Proper Attire
Always wear sturdy shoes with good tread when using a ladder, as well as clothing that won’t get caught on anything or cause slipping.
3. Use the Right Ladder for the Job
Always choose a ladder that is tall enough, and suited to the job.
4. Secure Your Ladder
Make sure your ladder is stable when being used and secure it to prevent movement during use.
5. Maintain Three Points of Contact
When climbing or descending ladders, maintain three points of contact at all times (2 hands and 1 foot, or 2 feet and 1 hand).
6. Don’t Overreach
Always stay within arm’s reach when on a ladder; never lean to the sides or attempt to overreach.
7. Have an Assistant
Whenever possible, have someone hold the base of the ladder to help ensure stability.
8. Don’t Move a Ladder with Someone on it
Never move or adjust a ladder while someone is on it.
