1. Hard hats.
Hard hats are designed to protect workers from head injuries that may be caused by falling objects, electric shock, and contact with moving objects. Hard hats should meet the national standards for protective headgear set forth by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
2. Safety glasses or goggles.
Safety glasses or goggles protect workers' eyes from dust, flying particles, and other hazards. OSHA requires that safety glasses meet the requirements of American National Standard Institute (ANSI) standards for protective eyewear.
3. Face shields.
Face shields protect workers' faces from hazardous chemicals, sparks, and other potential hazards. OSHA requires face shields to meet ANSI standards for impact-resistant headgear.
4. Ear protection, such as ear plugs and/or muffs.
Ear plugs or muffs protect workers from excessive noise, which can cause permanent hearing loss. Ear protection should meet the requirements set forth by OSHA for hearing conservation programs.
5. Respirators and other breathing devices.
Respirators and other breathing devices protect workers from inhaling hazardous particles and gasses. OSHA requires employers to provide respirators that meet the requirements of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
6. Aprons, coveralls, lab coats, or full-body suits.
Aprons, coveralls, lab coats, and full-body suits protect workers from hazardous chemicals and other dangers. OSHA requires employers to provide protective clothing that meets the requirements of ANSI standards for flame-resistant fabrics.
7. Protective gloves for safety from hazardous materials.
Protective gloves protect workers from contact with hazardous chemicals, heat, or electrical currents. Gloves must meet the requirements of ANSI standards for chemical-resistant hand protection.
8. Steel-toed boots or shoes with metatarsal guards.
Steel-toed boots or shoes with metatarsal guards protect workers from foot injuries caused by heavy objects. OSHA requires these items to meet ANSI standards for impact-resistant footwear.
9. Safety harnesses for working at heights.
Safety harnesses provide workers with a secure attachment point when working at heights, such as on ladders or scaffolding. Harnesses must meet the requirements of ANSI standards for fall protection equipment.
10. Fire-resistant clothing where necessary.
Fire-resistant clothing is designed to protect workers from the intense heat generated by fires and explosions. OSHA requires employers to provide fire-resistant clothing that meets ANSI standards for flame-resistant fabrics.
